Ecotours Colombia Birdwatching English

2009 tour programme available: see calendar.
EcoTurs Colombia runs birding and wildlife tours in Colombia, and manages visits to the ProAves bird reserves that protect the most endangered biodiversity.

We offer specialised birding tours with experienced tour leaders. Most of these are customized private birdwatching trips, but we also offer some scheduled tours and some more general wildlife tours.

The ProAves reserves are not just for birdwatchers, but open to all who want to enhance their holiday experience by visiting Colombia's diverse forests in safety. We particularly recommend the spectacular El Dorado reserve in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

We believe that sustainable ecotourism working closely with local communities is essential for bird conservation in Colombia and work with American Bird Conservancy to ensure 100% of profits support ProAves reserves.

The new Jeniam ecolodge at our El Dorado bird reserve at San Lorenzo above Santa Marta is now open for visitors.
This is a fantastic place to relax and take in the scenery, though with 17 endemic species that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world, most birders will be too excited for that!
Most birding is done along the main trail above and below the cabin, and the reserve can easily be visited with a direct flight from Miami to Barranquila or included on a birdwatching trip including several bird reserves of ProAves.
This lodge was constructed entirely from felling non-native conifers in the reserve in an area which will be replanted with native species, a dramatic example of how ecotourism can directly help conservation. Stop press - 21 endemics now!
Ecotourism in action: Our recent birding and conservation tour in association with American Bird Conservancy recorded a total of 587 species of birds.
Some fantastic birdwatching was had on this trip including Blue-billed Curassow, Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird, Colombian Mountain Grackle, Yellow-eared parrot, Santa Marta Parakeet, Fuertes’s Parrot and Dusky Starfrontlet.
Some lessons were learned from this tour and in future the group size on our tours will be limited to 7 birders plus leader(s).
